Salvation Army deadline nears

CLINTON —  Friday is the last day that people can sign up for Christmas assistance from the Salvation Army.

Lt. Jeanette Jensen said the number of applications received is drastically lower than last year. She fears this may be due to a miscommunication she has noticed this year. Jensen said that some people may think that the Salvation Army is still connected with the Holiday Network. Participants may think that if they are signed up with the schools, they are signed up with the Salvation Army.

This is not the case.

“And I feel badly with that,” Jensen said.

Residents can turn in applications to the Salvation Army for holiday baskets and Toys for Tots until 3 p.m. Friday. Jensen said they will prepare for as many people who apply. After the deadline, people can sign up on a waiting list. However, Jensen said she will not guarantee that they all will be served.

Most people who are granted government food stamps are available for Christmas assistance, Jensen said. People wanting to apply need to bring valid identification, proof of income and government wages and a piece of mail mailed to them in the past 30 days as proof of insurance. Applicants also need to bring proof of everyone who lives in their house, such as birth certificates or social security cards.

For additional information, visit the Salvation Army at 219 First Ave. or call 242-4502. Distribution days will be Dec. 19 and 20.
