UPDATE: Bond set in Savanna slaying
MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Bond has been set at $2 million for a Savanna, Ill., man accused of fatally stabbing a Rockford man Wednesday night.
David W. Klein, 21, of Savanna, was formally charged Thursday with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Jacob S. Morhardt, 21.
At 8:37 p.m. Wednesday, Savanna police received a report of a stabbing in the 300 block of Main Street, where Morhardt had been stabbed in the chest with a knife. He was transported to Mercy North Hospital in Clinton by Savanna Ambulance, then airlifted to Genesis East Hospital in Davenport, where he died.
Savanna police have not released details about the incident.
Klein was arrested shortly after and is being held in the Carroll County Jail. He has been charged with two murder counts — one that accuses him of committing an act with the intent to kill or injure and the other for committing an act that had the strong probability of killing or injury.
His preliminary hearing has been set for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 2.
Assisting the Savanna Police in the investigation are the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and the Thomson Police Department.
