More counterfeit bills circulating

CLINTON — Clinton Police are reporting more counterfeit currency in the area.

As reported by the Clinton Herald on Jan. 5, area businesses and financial institutions have reported the fake bills since Dec. 20. Between Dec. 20 and Sunday, Clinton Police say at least 13 suspected counterfeit bills have been passed to local businesses.

The denominations of counterfeit money include $10, $20 and $50.

Police are providing tips on what to do if a person receives a suspected counterfeit bill. This includes:

• Do not return it to the passer. However, do not go into harm’s way.

• Delay the passer if possible.

• Observe the passer’s description, as well as that of any companions, and the license plate numbers of any vehicles used.

n Limit the handling of the note. Carefully place it in a protective covering, such as an envelope.

• Contact the police department.

• Surrender the note only to a properly identified police officer or a U.S. Secret Service special agent.

For more information, contact the Clinton Police Department at 243-1457.
