THOMSON, Ill. —
A spokeswoman for U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) says reports of the Thomson prison being fully open by summer are incorrect.
Christina Mulka said Friday that it is unlikely the prison will be open by the summer.
The Clinton Herald reported this week that Illinois Rep. Mike Smiddy said “(the prison) is planning to start hiring this summer and get operational in the next six months.”
Mulka said that timeline is incorrect, and so far, there is no set date for opening the prison.
Durbin is confident that President Obama’s budget, which will be released in the coming weeks, will include activation funding for prisons around the country, including Thomson, Mulka said.
Also, Durbin is pleased the Department of Justice continues to move forward with preliminary steps needed to begin upgrading the facility and hiring employees.
