The newly formed Easton Valley School District will be led by a combined effort and nearly equal amount of citizens from Preston and East Central school districts.
The school board will consist of three members from Preston and four members from East Central, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s election.
It was a nearly even split for the seven at-large positions at the merged school district. Richard Keeney of Miles received the most support with 808 votes followed by Jodi Meyer of Sabula with 692 votes.
Roger Kilburg of Miles and Tom Feuerbach of Preston were not far behind with 670 votes and 667 votes respectively. Ronald Regenwether of Spragueville snagged the fifth spot with 632 votes. Craig Thines, current Preston School Board president, received 615 votes followed by Lance Abernathy of Sabula with 496 votes to round out the full board.
The new school board will be responsible for big decisions for the merger, including appointing a superintendent and business manager, establishing new curriculum and classes and much more.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Meyer said. “I’m excited for the first meeting and to start getting things going. These first six months will be crucial.”
While the merger orignally raised arguments in the two communities, the mixed board is prepared to work together and put aside differences.
“I’m looking forward to working with the other six members,” Abernathy said. “They are all great people and have what’s best in mind for the students.”
Of the 10 who ran for the positions, Scott Bormann of Preston, current Preston School Board Member Sally Marvin and Henry Kramer of Sabula missed the cut.
The next step for the new board is the Easton Valley School District Board of Directors’ organizational meeting on Monday at Preston Town Hall.
This meeting will include the election of board president and vice president along with appointing an acting superintendent, board secretary and determining the division of assets and liabilities.
The board will also establish district policies and organize curriculum at the meeting.
