State considers auditing City of Clinton's books

CLINTON — The state Auditor’s Office has notified the city that it is considering re-examining the city of Clinton’s finances for the fiscal year that ended June 30.

Last month, Clinton City Councilmen Paul Gassman, Ward 4, and John Rowland, at large, requested the state reaudit the city’s books based in part on concerns over the city’s sewer and garbage funds.

According to a letter from the director of the office’s financial audit division, Susan D. Battani, due to the nature of the reaudit issues and concerns, her office will provide information to the independent auditors for their review during the 2012 audit of the city.  This audit is being performed by Winkel, Parker and Foster agency of Clinton.

Upon completion and release of the fiscal year 2012 audit, the Auditor’s office will review the audit report and workpapers prepared by the city’s independent auditors, the letter stated.

Based on this information, the Auditor’s office will determine whether it will perform a complete or partial reaudit of the city.

According to Battani, the decision will be based on the concerns identified and the work performed by the CPA firm.

Mayor Mark Vulich said the city is prepared to cooperate fully.
