CLINTON —
After exploring the Gateway Area Hazardous Entry Approach Team vehicle during this year’s National Night Out, 5-year-old JyShon Harris, of Clinton, was full of questions.
The curious child snatched a seat on the bumper and talked for a few minutes with Mollie Galusha and Colin Reid of the Clinton Police Department’s Honor Guard about different times he might see police or other emergency workers before adventuring through the rest of the bustling event.
JyShon and his mother, Shelle, were two of the estimated 2,000 to 2,500 people to venture to Riverview Park on Saturday for Clinton’s sixth annual National Night Out.
The event is part of a nationally recognized initiative to promote safe communities. It also aims to familiarize children with the different emergency personnel that are active in the community.
“In order to combat crime, it takes a cooperative effort. We have to rely on the eyes and ears of our community now more than ever,” Police Chief Brain Guy said during the opening ceremony.
Connie Brashaw, one of the organizers from the Clinton Citizens Police Academy Board, was very happy with the event, including the number of businesses and volunteers who helped made the event a success.
“It’s amazing. We’re having a ball, it’s even better than planned,” she said.
Clinton police officers, Clinton firefighters, Clinton County sheriff’s deputies, several K-9 units, a Community Emergency Response Team, a Drug Abuse Resistance Education team, Medic and other emergency crews were on hand to interact with the community.
The event also included a helicopter lift-off, skydivers, a Jaws of Life demonstration from the Clinton Fire Department and a demonstration from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Clint and Kristina Davids, of Clinton, attended the event with their two young children, Caiden and Madisen.
“I think it’s one of the things Clinton does right,” he said.
The event, which is mainly organized by the Clinton Citizens Police Academy, also included prizes, games and train rides for kids.
