CLINTON —
For the sixth year, Clinton will participate in the National Night Out, a nationwide initiative to fight crime and promote safe communities. The event will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, near the Riverview Park Band Shell. The event is free.
“We’re really hoping to get kids to think good things about the police and firefighters. We want them to see they’re regular people,” Connie Brashaw, with the Clinton Citizens’ Police Academy Board said.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Police and Community: Red, White and Blue.” Clinton police officers, Clinton firefighters, Clinton County sheriff’s deputies, a K-9 unit, a Community Emergency Response Team, a DARE team, Canadian Pacific railroad police, Medic and others will be on hand to interact with the public.
“It will show the people of Clinton all the different services offered through emergency groups,” Clinton Police Capt. James Klaes said.
A new addition to this year’s event will be the presence of the Coast Guard.
They will be showing participants water safety, including lessons on how to use clothes to stay afloat, Brashaw said.
A skydiving team will also descend into the festivities during the National Anthem. The Clinton Citizens’ Police Academy will have give-aways and door prizes such as a basketball hoop and a mini-motorized car for children. There will also be free food, face painting, large inflatables, trackless train rides and live music. The all-sport challenge will also be available courtesy of the Ericksen Community Center.
“It will be a lot of fun,” Brashaw said.
The National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The traditional symbol of National Night Out is the display of outdoor and front porch lights. One of the purposes of the event is to strengthen neighborhood spirit and relationships between the police and the community, according to the NNO website.
“The city belongs to the people,” Klaes said.
Last year an estimated 2,200 people came out to enjoy in the free food and fun and learn more about what they could do to work with emergency groups in order to keep their neighborhoods and city safe.
“Hopefully it will be an even bigger success than last year,” Klaes said.
