CLINTON —
Clinton High School conducted its 138th annual commencement exercises Sunday afternoon.
Friends, family members and supporters packed CHS's Yourd Gymnasium to cheer for the 200 seniors who received diplomas during the ceremony.
Among the graduates, 24 were seniors from Lincoln High School.
Rather than designating a valedictorian or salutatorian, CHS honors the top 10 percent of the graduating class.
The male and female seniors with the highest grade point average lead the class into the gym while carrying banners that say “Kings” and “Queens” respectively. Those leaders for the class of 2012 were Saad Ansari and Megan Goetzl.
Three CHS seniors delivered commencement addresses on the school’s Trident Ideals.
Sydney Heppner spoke on fighting spirit, Andrew Howes spoke on tradition and Sydney Temperly spoke on loyalty. Senior speakers took turns delivering the address.
Heppner advised fellow students to draw from their time at CHS to overcome the challenges they will face in the future.
“The fighting spirit is what got you here today,” Heppner said. “Hold on to it and bring it everywhere you go,” she said.
Howes called on his classmates to look at previous graduating classes as they move beyond CHS.
“We must focus on the future, be inspired by what had come before us and excited for what we may become,” he said.
Temperly pointed her classmates to the school fight song as an example of loyalty they have developed.
“As we move on we will move on to new and exciting things, we will have that royalty moving through our veins.”
Following the commencement addresses, principal Karinne Tharaldson Jones spoke about the senior class.
“This is a class we will always remember. This class is a class of leaders. This is a class with determination,” she said.
Clinton School Board Vice President Mercia Wolf wished the graduating class good luck before the seniors were presented with their diplomas.
The graduation festivities also included the CHS brass quintet and the a capella choir, which sang “Miserere Mei” and “The Lord Bless You And Keep You.”
