CLINTON —
Clinton police responded to a call of possible shots fired late Wednesday night in the Miller Ridge Apartment area.
It was the second shots-fired called this week and follows an individual being shot at the apartment complex on June 19.
While police found no evidence that there was a shooting Wednesday night and the call came in during the same general time period as calls about fireworks, Clinton Police Capt. Bill Greenwalt said the police department concerned about the crime occurring near the complex at 2604 N. Fourth St.
“We’ve seen an increased number of calls relating to acts of violence in the area,” Greenwalt said. “It’s a serious and significant increase.”
On June 19, officers responded to a gunshot victim being treated at Mercy Hospital. The victim said he was shot outside building 14 at the apartment complex.
Less than a week later on Monday, police officers heard gunshots at the complex. The investigation following resulted in officers locating a handgun on the property.
In response to the violence, the Clinton police force is heightening its patrols near the complex.
“We have an entire city to protect, but when time and staffing allow we have an increased presence in the area,” said Greenwalt.
Miller Ridge Apartments manager Renee Tyler said she is working with the police to keep the crime down.
“I’m surprised. I am. We have a lot of good tenants here,” Tyler said. “We’re trying to figure it out and get it cleared up.”
The June 19 and Monday shootings are currently under investigation.
