Recount eyed in merger vote

MILES — The next steps are uncertain for the upcoming Easton Valley School District, but if the official results remain as close as they are now, a recount will likely happen.

Official results will be canvassed at the Jackson County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. If the difference is still within one percent, Opt4EC, a group opposed to the merger, will ask for a recount.

“We owe it to our supporters to verify that the count is accurate,” the group stated on its website. “We assume that it will be accurate and that planning for an Easton Valley district will move forward.”

A school board election for the new district will be held in January. So far details are unknown as to how many positions there will be and when nomination papers can be filed. Changes will take effect in the 2013-2014 school year when the two districts officially combine to become Easton Valley, as long as the totals remain the same on the official count.

The special school election for the merger between East Central and Preston school districts resulted in a majority of votes from both districts in favor of new district Easton Valley.

The election called for a simple majority for both school districts. While it was a big win in the Preston School District with 86.5 percent, it was a narrow victory in the East Central School District with 50.8 percent. A total of 2,112 voters cast ballots out of 3,154 registered voters for an overall 66.96 percent voter turnout.

Currently, East Central has a three-year, whole-grade sharing agreement with the Northeast School District. East Central seventh- through 12th-grade students take classes at Northeast’s Goose Lake campus.

Preston has an agreement with the Maquoketa School District to send high school students there for some classes.

Both districts have a complete elementary program.

Opt4EC favors a partnership with Northeast and encouraged residents to look into open enrollment at Northeast as an option in addition to Easton Valley, in a statement on their website.

“Already open-enrollment papers have arrived at Northeast,” the group stated. “If families wish to continue at Northeast, open-enrollment is an option. If Easton Valley continues to send high school students to Maquoketa for half of the day or falls short of people’s dreams in other ways, open enrollment is an option for them too.”
