Clinton Social Security office to close

CLINTON — Despite efforts of area legislators, the Clinton Social Security office, 226 Fourth Ave. South, will close at the end of the month.

The Social Security Administration announced on Friday the office will close on Sept. 28.

According to the press release, these services will be discontinued due to significant cuts to Social Security’s administration budget by Congress. Closing the office is expected to save the SSA $600,000 over five years.

Beginning Oct. 1, Clinton organizations and residents will be served by the Davenport office, located at 4319 North Brady St., Davenport. Office hours are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

The Clinton office was previously slated to be closed in 2004 and 2008, but was saved after concerns were raised about elderly or disabled residents’ travel restrictions and their discomfort with accessing services by phone or internet.

Earlier this month, U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, wrote a letter to the SSA. They indicated that the office currently serves 49,000 residents of Clinton County, including 10,000 current Social Security beneficiaries.  According to a previous letter from the legislators, the Clinton SSA office serves 210 people a week. This is an increase from the 180 people served in 2009.

The SSA reminds people in its press release that most social security services do not require a visit to the office.

People wishing to apply for benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card, obtain a proof of income or inform the office of a change in address or telephone number, may visit www.socialsecurity.gov or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
