Three local teens airlifted after two-car accident

SAVANNA, Ill. — A two-vehicle accident Tuesday evening resulted in three teenagers being airlifted to trauma centers.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred on Illinois 84 south of Savanna near the Seven Eagles Campgrounds. The emergency call was placed to the Savanna Dispatch Center at 7:39 p.m. with a report of a vehicle on fire with occupants trapped inside. By the time first responders arrived the victims had been pulled to safety by passersby.

The sheriff’s department said the accident was caused when a northbound vehicle driven by Brandon Wiley, 16, of Thomson, Ill., collided with a southbound vehicle driven by Matthew Handel, 18, also of Thomson. Handel’s passenger was Angela Mantua, 17, of Mount Carroll.

All three were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Condition reports were unavailable early today.

Assisting sheriff’s deputies at the scene were the Savanna Fire Department and Ambulance, Thomson fire and ambulance, Mount Carroll ambulance, an Illinois State Police accident reconstructionist, the Savanna and Thomson police departments and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The accident remains under investigation.
