Councilman threatened
CLINTON — A Clinton city councilman has reported to police that he was chased and threatened by four men outside the apartment building he manages.
According to a police report released Thursday, Ward 2 Councilman Mike Kearney reported to police that he was threatened by the four men at the Van Allen building in downtown Clinton.
Kearney, 67, lives in the Van Allen apartment building at 200 Fifth Ave. South and serves as the building manager. According to the police report, the events took place early Saturday morning.
Police say Kearney was notified by another Van Allen resident that several unauthorized vehicles were parked in the lot west of the building. He notified the police department, which issued parking citations.
Kearney returned to his apartment. While listening to his police scanner, he learned police were chasing a suspect throughout the parking lot. Kearney took his camera and decided to investigate, as several incidents of vandalism had previously occurred in the lot.
Once outside, Kearney saw four males near the fence between the parking lot and Sally Findlay Park.
It appeared that the men were going to jump over the fence to enter the parking lot. Kearney photographed the four men.
When the men asked why Kearney had taken their photograph, he explained that they would be trespassing if they entered the parking lot, police say.
The men threatened Kearney, chasing him into the foyer of the Van Allen Building. The four men fled when Kearney called police on his cell phone.
According to another resident of the building, the men got into two of the cars the police previously ticketed.
The police incident report cites one assault and one burglary offense.
The police investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
