CLINTON —
Residents of District 49, and those of other districts in the local media market, have become familiar with their candidates for the newly created state senate seat, Democrat Rita Hart and Republican Andrew Naeve through mailers, newspaper ads, radio ads and through an outlet seldom used in state legislative races, television ads.
“Generally speaking, it’s rare to see advertising for state legislative races,” Dennis Goldford, professor of political science at Drake University, said. “You’re spending money to cover a broad area that might not be in the same state or district. It’s not very efficient.”
According to the OnMedia advertising market map of the Clinton market, ads aired by Hart or Naeve would also reach residents far outside of their district, from Maquoketa to Prophetstown, Ill.
Goldford also said it’s not often that candidates have the kind of money to spend on advertising. Lack of funds, though, does not seem to be a problem in the race for the new senate seat.
Reports in the latest filing period, which ran from July 15 to Oct. 14, show Hart received $187,543.63 in in-kind contributions, including a $34,000 contribution from the Iowa Senate Majority Fund for placing a TV advertisement.
In total, Hart received $59,170 in in-kind contributions of TV production and ad placement.
Her total cash contributions came in at $43,367.52. Hart ended the period with $11,181.89 on-hand for the final stretch to election day.
Naeve received $28,829 in in-kind contributions during the same period and $68,730 in cash contributions. In the latest filing period, reports show he spent $24,203 on television production and advertising and ended period with $22,423.81 in cash on-hand.
Cash flow in the other state legislative races is substantially lower than in Senate District 49 based on campaign finance reports. In the race for Iowa House District 98, incumbent Mary Wolfe received $10,397 in cash contributions during the latest reporting period. She received $350 in in-kind contributions, mainly for fundraisers. Wolfe ended the period with $10,537.68 in cash on-hand.
Wolfe’s no-party challenger Carolyn Grimes received $2,240 in cash contributions and $635.24 in in-kind contributions. Grimes loaned $500 of her own money for her campaign and ended with $1,666.61 in cash on-hand.
District 97 incumbent, Steve Olson, received $51,615 in cash contributions and $1,442.56 in in-kind contributions. He ended the period with $2,745.80.
Challenger Ted Whisler received $2,987 in cash contributions and $681.05 in in-kind contributions. Whisler also loaned $418 of his own money to end the period with $2,279.96 in cash on-hand, according to the reports.
