CLINTON —
More houses have been foreclosed in Clinton and in Clinton County in August than the national average, according to a new report.
While the national foreclosure rate for August is one in 681 housing units, Clinton is at one in 610 with 21 foreclosures, according to a report released by RealtyTrac.
This report shows foreclosure filings — default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions — were reported on 193,508 U.S. properties in August, an increase of 1 percent from July but down 15 percent from August 2011.
The state of Iowa had 1,323 foreclosures in the month of August, leaving it at a rate of one in every 1,010 units, well below the national average. Clinton County had 28 foreclosures with a rate of one in every 672 units, leaving it above the national measure along with the city of Clinton. Nearby Jackson County remained far below the national average with only five foreclosures for a rate of one in every 1,506, according to the report.
Illinois posted the nation’s highest foreclosure rate, one in every 298 housing units with a foreclosure filing. August was the first month that Illinois has ranked number one since RealtyTrac began issuing its report in January 2005. The state reported 17,781 foreclosures for the month of August. Whiteside County remained well below the state’s rate and the national average with a rate of one in 862 and 24 foreclosures.
Morrison reported an even lower rate with one in 1,061 and three foreclosures, according to the report.
Carroll County reported the highest rate of foreclosures of the surrounding area with a rate of one in 446 units and 18 foreclosures. The small town of Savanna also had a high rate with one in 294 units and eight foreclosures.
Twenty states registered year-over-year increases in foreclosure activity, led by judicial foreclosure states such as New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Illinois and Pennsylvania. Following three straight months of year-over-year increases, U.S. foreclosure starts in August decreased 13 percent from a 17-month high in August 2011. U.S. bank repossessions (REO) in August decreased 2 percent from the previous month and were down 19 percent annually — the 22nd consecutive month with a year-over-year decline in REOs, according to RealtyTrac.
