Police: Man drives car into Clinton residence

CLINTON — A Clinton man drove his 2003 Chevrolet Impala into a residence Friday morning.

Clinton police responded to an accident at 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of 19th Avenue North and North Second Street.

According to Sgt. Steven Kopp, Merlin Schmidt, 87, of Clinton was leaving the alley on the south side of Van Buer Insurance, 1826 N. Second St., and heading north in the 1800 block of North Second Street when he mistook his accelerator for his brake.

Schmidt accelerated and hit a construction barrel before striking a raised median. He continued north, crossing 19th Avenue North. The vehicle entered the yard and parking lot at Clinton National Bank, 1912 N. Second St., and struck a parked vehicle in the lot.

Schmidt continued to the west side of the lot, crashing into a residential fence and shed. The vehicle ended up against the house.

No one was injured in the accident. Kopp was unaware if anyone was home in the residence. Schmidt was charged with failure to maintain control.
