CLINTON —
Clinton County will spend more than $27,000 to increase security.
Maintenance Manager Corey Johnson and Clinton County Justice Commission Coordinator Brian McKenrick presented security provisions for the administration building and the courthouse. Provisions for the administration building included the installation of a panic system and card readers at doorways.
Many panic buttons will be placed in strategic places in the administration building. Johnson and McKenrick would not disclose where for security reasons. Employees would be able to push these buttons to call police and warn employees in the building. County Auditor Eric Van Lancker described the desired result as an “appropriate and rapid response.”
The supervisors expressed concerns about if members of the public could accidentally set off the system. Johnson assured the board that the system cannot be tripped accidentally.
“You’re not going to brush against it and set it off,” Van Lancker said.
The cost of the installation and training for the system is $10,385. The county will also add card readers to restrict access at employee entrances and at the front door after hours. This system will cost the county $17,151. These two projects remain within the $30,500 that was allotted in the budget for security.
The installation of security cameras, which has been discussed previously, will be delayed for at least a year. Johnson said they felt the panic system needed to be in place first.
“You would rather have help coming than be able to say this was the person after the fact,” Johnson said.
Johnson and McKenrick are currently working on security at the courthouse as well. McKenrick said they need to firm up certain policies and details. The board was happy with the work Johnson and McKenrick have done so far.
“I want to thank you fellows and all your efforts to not only help to ensure the safety of the employees, but the people who are visiting,” Chairman Brian Schmidt said. “That’s the purpose of doing this.”
