Man receives suspended sentence

CLINTON — A man charged with the delivery of marijuana will receive a suspended sentence.

Joseph Hicks, 27, was sentenced Thursday morning by Judge Gary McKenrick, after he pleaded guilty to delivery of marijuana. McKenrick ordered Hicks to serve as many as five years in prison and fined him $750. However, both the sentence and the fine were suspended.

McKenrick felt that Hicks would benefit from supervised probation. Hicks’ attorney pointed out that the charge originated in September 2010. Since then, Hicks is in a stable relationship, has received treatment and is maintaining employment.

“I did mess up when I was younger,” Hicks said in court. “I was just young and not knowing what I was doing.”

Hicks must complete two years of probation. He must complete a substance abuse evaluation, participate in random drug testing and pay $280 in restitution to the Clinton Police Department.

His driver’s license was revoked for six months.
