DEWITT — A 17-year-old DeWitt male accused of hiring a man to kill his stepfather was arrested Tuesday with another juvenile alleged to be a second accomplice in the Friday night shooting in DeWitt.
Randalle O. Cross is facing felony charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder after allegedly hiring Nicho-las J. Hebdon, 21, of DeWitt, to kill his stepfather. Hebdon was arrested Sunday on a charge of first-degree burglary. According to DeWitt police, the charges will probably be upgraded.
Ryan M. Peters, 16, of Delmar, the other alleged accomplice in the incident, was arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree burglary and attempt to commit murder.
Heb-don and Peters, wearing masks, entered Gary Smith’s residence at 902 10th St. at 6:05 p.m., according to court records. Hebdon allegedly fired a .45-caliber pistol at Smith, who was lying on a sofa. The bullet narrowly missed Smith’s head, striking the wall directly behind him, according to court records.
Hebdon and Peters then allegedly fled on foot out the home’s back door.
Cross allegedly met with Hebdon beforehand and provided him with the handgun, agreeing to pay Hebdon money once the murder was complete and Smith’s home and belongings had been sold.
Hebdon, Cross and Peters are being held in the Clinton County Jail, each on $50,000 bond. Hebdon is scheduled for an initial court appearance Tuesday, and Cross and Peters are scheduled to appear Dec. 11.
