Plowing through snow

CLINTON — Snow plows have made their way through Clinton clearing both residential and main streets and will continue through today dispensing salt on roads that could begin to freeze and become slick.

Public Works Director Gary Schellhorn said all the streets in Clinton will have been plowed once by Wednesday night and crews will be going back through to clear out the remaining patches of snow.

“We've been out on 12-hour shifts starting (Tuesday), continuing through the night and we're still going to continue until we get everything cleaned up,” Schellhorn said.

The snow stopped falling by Wednesday afternoon but temperatures began dropping and winds picked up resulting in some drifting. However, the snow that fell on Clinton and the surrounding area was less than what was originally predicted.

Areas west of Clinton took the brunt of the storm and cities such as Des Moines reported more than one foot of snow and high winds.

For today, the National Weather Service has forecasted freezing temperatures and the wind chill could dip to 25 degrees below zero. The frigid temperatures could freeze whatever remains on the roads and create a hazard for drivers.

Schellhorn said crews will work on getting salt down but recommended drivers use caution. Because of the conditions, the Iowa State Police issued a towing ban for Clinton and five other counties on the interstate and state highways.

Temperatures could pick up this weekend and be in the low 20s, according to the NWS.

Complaints from residents about the city’s response to clearing the roadways have been fairly limited.

Schellhorn said the public works department had received some calls but the four Ward councilmen said Wednesday they have heard little from constituents.

One of the two complaints came from Bill Walker who said the plow created a wall of snow in front of his home.

“I'm plowed in and I can't get out,” Walker said. “There is no way you can drive a car through it.”

A representative from Smith Brothers Grocery Store also said the snow plowed blocked an entrance to the parking lot.

For the most part, the weather conditions have resulted in few car accidents. Clinton Police Capt. Mike Gertson said there have been a few incidents of cars sliding off the roads but not an overwhelming total. He said the CPD had issued about 90 citations for vehicles left on marked snow routes.

Vehicles will not be able to park on marked snow routes until the snow emergency is lifted tonight at 6 p.m.

Tuesday’s storm also resulted in more than 2,000 people in Camanche and an additional 761 people living in Clinton County to not have power, according to MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy’s Web sites.

At press time today the two sites reported no cases of residents without power.
