Ashford confirms Country Club sale

CLINTON — Ashford University on Friday announced its parent company, Bridgepoint Education, will exercise its option to purchase the land owned by the Clinton Country Club.

Almost 90 years has passed since the Clinton Country Club opted to purchase property along 14th Street and Harrison Drive to house a private golf course. Now, according to Ashford University Director of Communications Larry Libberton, the former golf course will be used for “future campus expansion of its growing academic institution.”

The announcement came one day before Ashford University planned to host three graduation ceremonies for its winter commencement.

Clinton Country Club Vice President Chris Vens declined to comment.

“Ashford University has always been and continues to remain committed to the community of Clinton,” Libberton said.

Valley Oaks, located at 3330 Harts Mill Road, now sits as Clinton’s only 18-hole golf course. Canyon Creek Golf Club, 1871 420th Ave., is a nine-hole course in Clinton.

In 1920, the Clinton Country Club voted to purchase the farm property south of Harrison Drive and 14th Street. The club opened as a nine-hole golf course in 1922, with no clubhouse and lockerroom facilities available in a barn.

The course expanded to 18 holes in 1927, by acquiring the tract north of Harrison Drive. A new clubhouse was also completed.

A fire destroyed 75 percent of the clubhouse in 1949. Reconstruction to the clubhouse allowed it to stay open year-round.

The area now includes a swimming pool, driving range, putting greens, dining area, pro shop and bar.
