CLINTON —
Darrell Thomas, 27, will serve as many as 25 years in prison for first-degree robbery.
Clinton County District Court Judge Joel W. Barrows ordered Thomas to serve the mandatory sentence of up to 25 years in the Iowa Department of Corrections on Thursday. Thomas will not be eligible for parole until he has served 70 percent of the sentence, approximately 17 1/2 years.
A jury found Thomas guilty of the Oct. 18 robbery of Library Pawn Shop, 901 N. Second St., in January. According to the jury’s verdict, Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf proved that Thomas entered the pawn shop on Oct. 18 with a dangerous weapon with the intent to commit a theft. Defense attorney Bruce Ingham argued that the knife Thomas used to threaten owner Shirley Reed did not constitute as dangerous under Iowa statute. He asked jurors to convict his client of robbery in the second degree instead.
After deliberating 30 minutes, the jury found Thomas guilty of the greater charge.
