CLINTON —
Clinton area residents are invited to share their thoughts about illegal drug activity affecting youth with the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy at the “Speak Out For Kids” listening post.
The first-of-its-kind event will be hosted from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Clinton Community College Technology Center Room 10, 1951 Manufacturing Drive.
The event will give area residents the chance to share their concerns, needs, issues, success stories and any other information they feel important with the Iowa Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy Director Steve Lukan and Partnership @ DrugFreeIowa.org President Peter Komendowsk.
“Our state officials will be able to find out what’s going on in our community,” local partner, Gateway ImpACT coalition Director Derek Clark said. “This will open the dialogue.”
Information gathered at the Clinton listening post will assist in defining priorities for the next state Drug Control Strategy and refining drug control initiatives.
“We often hear ‘we need the funding,’ but what for?” Iowa Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy Associate Director Dale Woolery said. “This will better help us understand what the local priorities are.”
Woolery said communities across the state have been selected to host listening posts, but we’re not targeted specifically because of their drug use.
“We’re not looking at statistics to determine what communities. We’d like to make sure we hear from communities across the state and people from all walks of life,” Woolery said. “It’s an opportunity for those we might not necessarily hear from.”
Residents are encouraged to attend the event. Those who cannot attend can submit their comments to peter@drugfreeiowa.org.
