CLINTON —
While the state unemployment rate remained stagnant at 5 percent for January, all of Iowa’s largest cities experienced a spike in unemployment, including the city of Clinton.
Clinton’s rate went from 5.9 percent in December to 7 percent unemployment in January, giving the city the state’s 10th-highest average among 25 of Iowa’s largest cities, which is unchanged from December. All 25 cities experienced increases in the unemployment rate from December to January.
The Fort Madison-Keokuk area has the state’s highest unemployment rate at 10.2 percent, more than 2 percentage points higher than the nation’s rate of 7.9 percent.
It’s not unusual for cities to experience higher unemployment numbers from December to January. Clinton’s rate has experienced major changes from December to January since 2008, only to taper off in February and the spring months.
Although the rate jumped by more than 1 percent, the city is still on a pace of improving from year-to-year. Last year’s unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in January. The last time the city hadn’t improved its unemployment rate on a year-to-year basis was August 2011.
Clinton County’s rate also jumped from 5.7 percent to 7 percent.
It’s still ahead of last year’s rate of 7.5 percent.
