CLINTON —
Clinton fire officials today are crediting a smoke detector project for preventing injuries during a fire that broke out at a Clinton residence Wednesday.
The Clinton Fire Department was called shortly before 6 a.m. to 609 Fifth Ave. South for a report of a fire in an upstairs back bedroom.
Firefighters found a sofa on fire in the bedroom and later determined the fire was most likely caused by accidental discarding of smoking materials.
Fire officials noted that all occupants of the residence were out of the building when firefighters arrived. They said an occupant of the residence was awakened by a smoke detector that was activated.
The occupant thought it was a relative’s alarm clock until she opened her bedroom door and saw smoke. She called 9-1-1 and then other occupants who were sleeping on the second floor were awakened and left the house.
Fire officials said the fact no one was injured shows smoke detectors save lives, and said these units were installed as part of the Smoke Detector Project instituted in June 2009.
Damage as a result of the fire was $5,000, fire reports state. The residence is insured.
