CLINTON —
The Clinton County Development Association Board of Directors approved a variance in a grant for a building that will be used by the city and the Clinton LumberKings.
Instead of constructing the entire building as planned, Parks Superintendent Tom Krogman and Ted Tornow, general manager of the Clinton LumberKings, suggested building only the foundation and slab. This change is due to a shortage in matching funds.
This building —designed to store equipment for both the baseball club and the city — was originally a part of the Vision Iowa project several years ago. However, when the budget was set, the storage building they had planned was cut, Krogman said. Krogman and Tornow applied for approximately $56,000 from CCDA, with $18,000 to match.
“The funds are there to match if the $56,000 would have been granted,” Tornow said during the Wednesday board meeting.
Instead, the CCDA granted the project $15,000. Krogman said with the money they have now, all they can do is build as much of the building as they can and come back to it at a later date.
“We’ve always had a great relationship with Tom (Krogman) and the city and the park department. Right now it’s a collaborative effort,” Tornow said. “He’s got a few bucks. We’ve got a few dollars. Friends of Riverview Stadium has a few dollars.”
Tornow said the plan is to get the slab in and then begin fundraising. CCDA Director Jerome Burken expressed concerns about putting in the foundation without a solid idea on where the rest of the money will come from.
“We can look at this slab of cement foundation for five to 10 years,” Burken said.
“It would be great if the funds were available, but we can work hard and I know Tom (Krogman) wants to make it a reality,” Tornow said.
The board approved a motion to allow the variance in the grant.
