Slow start costly for Queens

CLINTON — Scoring droughts after several minutes of playing even have put the Clinton girls basketball team in a hole several times this season.

Friday, the drought came even earlier.

With the exception of about a one-minute span midway through the first quarter, the River Queens were unable to connect for the first 11 minutes of the game, and North Scott took advantage as it beat the River Queens 55-31 at WJ Yourd Gymnasium.

“We’ve been doing a really good job of starting games, then having droughts,” Clinton coach Mike Halac said. “The girls are starting to get tired of it, which is exactly what we want.”

All the River Queens could manage were back-to-back baskets from junior Erin Wenzel halfway through the first period. They came after the Lancers scored the first five points. And after Rachel Edmundson scored in the lane to push North Scott’s lead to 7-4, Clinton had a chance to tie, but Elle Tubbs’ 3-point try missed the mark.

After that, every shot Clinton put up was off the mark for most of the half.

The Lancers took advantage, building a 13-4 lead by the end of the quarter and 19-10 advantage at the half. Wenzel scored four of the final five points of the half, and had eight of her nine by intermission.

“Before the game, we talked about a snowballing effect. There are simple mistakes the girls are working hard to forget with a little more experience,” Halac said.

“I was really happy with our effort,” said first-year North Scott coach Todd Borrison, a Camanche native who guided Preston to consecutive state titles earlier this century. “When you find out on Wednesday you’ve lost two of the three posts you rotate (injured players Anna Bonfield and McKenna Heim), you’ve got some concerns. We were making some last-minute adjustments.”

Jordan Nelson led Clinton, which never got within single digits in the second half, with 12 points.
