BURLINGTON —
For several minutes, the Clinton River Queens battled Burlington toe to toe. The teams traded baskets, the lead changing back time and time again.
Clinton took a 10-9 lead midway through the opening quarter before the Grayhounds responded with six points in a row. By the time the game ended, that run was fairly tame.
Burlington closed the quarter by outscoring Clinton 11-2, opened the second quarter with 17 consecutive points and added a 15-0 run in the third quarter on the way to a 63-31 win in Mississippi Athletic Conference girls basketball.
McKenzie Petersen ended the early six-point surge with a tip-in that cut Clinton’s deficit to 15-12, but Courtney Carl connected for the Grayhounds and Megan Mixer nailed a 3-pointer just before the quarter ended for a 20-12 lead. But Burlington took complete control in the second quarter, building its advantage to 41-16 at halftime.
Kelsi Conner led the Grayhounds (2-3, 1-2 MAC) with 27 points, while Mixer added 10.
Petersen led Clinton with 10 points, and Erin Wenzel added nine.
