CAMANCHE — The plot was basically the same for Camanche in both halves of a girls-boys basketball doubleheader Friday night against Prince of Peace — play a lackluster first quarter, take control in the second quarter and cruise to a relatively easy win.

In the girls game, Camanche trailed 17-11 after the first quarter, led by nine at halftime and won 68-56. The Indians’ boys led by two after the first quarter, extended that to 12 at the half and won 67-41.

In the girls game, Prince of Peace (3-7, 2-5) took an 11-4 lead six minutes into the game, behind five points from Jackie Kokjohn, who finished with eight. Karli Atkinson grabbed 12 rebounds for the Irish.

The Camanche girls (8-2, 4-2 Big East Conference) trailed 20-11 after Megan Mulholland hit a 3-pointer on Prince of Peace’s first possession of the second quarter. Then Julia Moore hit a jumper from the elbow — for the third Camanche possession in a row — to cut the lead to seven. Julia Isenhour made one free throw for Prince of Peace, but then the Indians changed defenses and the Irish didn’t score for nearly the next six minutes.

“We changed to a 1-2-2 zone,” Camanche coach Danny Vogel said. “Jordan Nissen, Kylie (Vogel) and Lindsey (Grams) were really active. I made them run a lot. They extended the perimeter really well. It was a different look, and our man-to-man wasn’t working because we didn’t move our feet at all.”

Offensively, Grams, a junior, took over. She drilled three consecutive 3-pointers to turn a 21-13 deficit into a 22-21 lead. Grams finished the game 7-for-10 from behind the 3-point line, setting the school record for made 3-pointers.

“It’s exciting for me,” Grams said. “I’m happy. I tied it last year, so I’m happy I finally broke it.”

After the barrage from Grams, Kylie Vogel hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Camanche ahead 28-21. Moore made another elbow jumper, and then Grams hit her fourth 3-pointer of the quarter for a 33-21 lead and capping a 20-0 run.

“I was just on fire,” Grams said. She finished with a game-high 24 points. Moore scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

“We played as good as we can play offensively for a while there in the second quarter,” said coach Vogel, whose team had 21 assists on 26 field goals. “The ball movement was really good, and we were knocking down shots.”‘

Andrea Aquilani hit a 3-pointer for Prince of Peace before halftime to make the deficit single digits at the break. She made five 3-pointers and led the Irish with 19 points.

While the overall theme was the same in both games, the reasons for the second-quarter improvement were different.

“We all started knocking down shots,” Grams said. “Our offense was a lot better in the second quarter.”

The Camanche boys (5-3, 4-2) scored 18 points in the first quarter — their highest output of the game — so it wasn’t the offense that needed improvement.

“It was our defense,” Camanche senior Mitchell Roth said. “We were a little sluggish at first and coach got after us. We went back to man defense like we’ve been doing all along.

“We were playing them tighter and more physical. We were getting in the lanes and not letting them get easy buckets.”

It worked as the Indians continued their scoring with 17 — eight points and two assists from Roth — but held the Irish to one point through the first 4:47 while forcing five turnovers. During that time, Camanche scored nine points of its own.

The Indians forced 21 turnovers as they controlled the game with their defense. Of Camanche’s eight third-quarter baskets, six were layups as the Indians stretched their lead.

Roth led four Indians in double figures with a game-high 17 points.

“I just kept attacking the basket,” Roth said. “It helps a lot with Isaah (Jackson) and Norm (Devin Norman) because we space the floor and guys have to stay on them. If I can get by my guy, usually there’s not a lot of help, so I was getting easy buskets.”

Prince of Peace was at its best early in both games, despite the teams coming off a long layoff.

The Irish boys (0-9, 0-7) took a 12-11 lead with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter when Lucas Laufenberg nailed a 3-pointer. He scored seven of his team-high 12 points in the first quarter.

“We had a scrimmage, but you can’t have a crowd like this anywhere with this intensity,” Roth said. “We took a quarter to get back and then we got after it pretty good.”
