DIXON, Ill. —
Howard E. Swanson, age 85, formerly of Fulton, died Wednesday January 23, 2013, at his winter home in Estero, Fla.
Howard was born in Fulton Township the son of Roy S. and Elizabeth E. (Montgomery) Swanson. He married Betty Jean Balk in 1952. She preceded him in death on May 30, 1953. In 1955, he married Irma DeWeerdt and in 1983 married Lois Near.
He was affiliated with fuel oil, gas and propane businesses since 1955 until his retirement in 2011. Howard was a 57-year member of the Fulton Fire Department, 52-year member of the Fulton American Legion Post 402, 32 years on Fulton Flood Control Board, 32 years on Whiteside County Zoning Board and 10-year member of the Clinton Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952 and served in the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include two daughters, Patti (Jim) Susan of Dixon and Julie (John) Domansky of Hendersonville, N.C.; one son, Cal (Cindy) Swanson of Clinton, Iowa; one sister, Eleanor Nice of Morrison; one brother, Donald (Doris) Swanson of Shannon; eight grandchildren: Tyler, Taylor, Jordan, Ian, Lacey, Jenise, Kelly and James; one great-grandchild, Kaylynn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven in infancy; two brothers, LeRoy and Leslie Swanson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2013, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Fulton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday February 2, 2013, at the funeral home in Fulton, 1601 16th Ave., with the Reverend Edie Lenz, chaplain of the Fulton Fire Department, officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at the Fulton Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Fulton Fire Department.
