WAYCROSS, Ga. —
Mr. James Walter Bell, 98, of Waycross died Thursday morning at Hospice Satilla Hospice House after a brief illness.
He was born in Sparta, Georgia, to the late Gilbert Bell and Lena F. Bell. Mr. Bell lived a majority of his life in Clinton, Iowa, before moving to Waycross seven years ago. During wartime he was instrumental in working on the Atomic Bomb, also known as the “Manhattan Project.” In Clinton, he worked for E.I. DuPont Manufacturing Company as a mechanical engineer for forty years before retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Clinton, Iowa, the Clinton Kiwanis Club and Clinton Country Club. In Waycross, he attended Grace Episcopal Church. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Potter Bell; two brothers, Gilbert Bell and John Bell; two sisters, Julia Pierce and Velma Bell; and a niece, Julia Pierce Tomlinson.
Mr. Bell is survived by a son, Walter F. Bell of Aurora, Illinois; a niece, Barbara Pierce Young of Waycross; a nephew, Wilds L. Pierce of Atlanta; and numerous other relatives.
A memorial service will take place on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Mr. Bell will be interred beside his wife at Clinton Memorial Park Cemetery.
