Francis Smith was born September 14, 1933, in rural Morrison, IL, to Clarence and Helen (Prins) Smith. He lived in Illinois for more than 60 years where he served as an Illinois state trooper for 30 years and was also a manager of Super Wash in Morrison. He moved to Mountain Home, AR, in 1995, where he and his wife retired.
Francis was a 1951 graduate of Fulton High School, Fulton, IL. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, serving in Iceland and Minot, ND. After moving to Mountain Home, he was an active community volunteer and past commissioner of the Northeast Lakeside Fire Department. In addition, he enjoyed traveling, fishing, bluegrass music and sailing.
He is survived by his brother, Gerald Smith, of Kenosha, WI; children, Sonja Smith of Delray Beach, FL, Laura Bopes Lukowski of Lee’s Summit, MO, and David Smith of Campbell, CA; grandchildren, Serena Okray of Omro, WI, Heidi King of Aurora, IL, Nick Bopes of Windsor Heights, IA, and Malcolm Smith of Campbell, CA; and great-grandchildren, Erin and Seth Okray of Omro, WI, and Owen and Levi King of Aurora, IL.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan (Davidson) Smith; his parents and eight of his brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mountain Home, AR, with Rev. Nancy L. Taylor officiating. Arrangements and cremation services provided by Roller Funeral Home, Mountain Home, AR.
