John R. Wiersema, 82, of Fulton, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at his home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Trinity Reformed Church, Fulton, with the Rev. Tom Merchant, pastor of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Fulton Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Trinity Reformed Church.
He was born July 24, 1930, in Fulton to John H. “Jack” and Katherine (Haan) Wiersema.
He was educated in the Otter Bluff grade school in rural Fulton. John attended Fulton High School.
He married Beatrice B. Van Houten on November 20, 1952, in Fulton.
John along with his wife, Beatrice, farmed in the Garden Plain area for 17 years. They moved to Fulton in 1971 where John worked for local electricians in Fulton and Morrison. He also worked for DuPont in Clinton, IA. He worked as a journeyman for the IBEW Local #145, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Trinity Reformed Church. He was a member of IBEW Local #145. John enjoyed woodworking, giving away many of his projects and made all the plaques for the Easter Seals Run in Clinton, IA. John was an avid fisherman, enjoyed gardening and feeding the local birds. John enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; two daughters, Marcia (Bill) Thorpe of Rapid City, IL; Gaye (Tommy) Littlejohn of Fulton; two sons, Robert (Gail) Wiersema of Albany, IL, and David (Susan) Wiersema of Fulton; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Katherine (Leon) Groh of Fulton, IL, Delores (Don) Goodridge of Fulton and Patsy (Gary) Bechtel of Morrison, IL; three brothers, Kenneth Wiersema of Fulton, Vernon (Donna) Wiersema of Houston, TX, and Steven (Gloria) Wiersema of Colorado Springs, CO; special friends, Ken (Janice) Ottens of Fulton.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie Ann Wiersema; one grandson, Joseph Littlejohn; four brothers, Henry, Thomas, Donald and Edwin Wiersema.
