School district voters, let your voice be heard

CLINTON — Many letters to the editor have been printed in the Clinton Herald during the last few weeks concerning tomorrow’s vote on whether the Preston and East Central school districts should merge to form an entirely new one known as Easton Valley.

If you have been keeping up with those letters, it is easy to see that members in those communities as well as those in the Northeast School District, which currently has a whole grade sharing agreement in place with East Central, have deep emotions about what could happen.

Signs in people’s yards show that it truly is neighbor against neighbor in some areas, with those against the merger saying the whole grade sharing is working out well with Northeast and that they wish to keep the East Central district intact rather than dissolve it into a merger.

Those for the merger say it would be good because it is time for a change and that the new district could make it on its own, something contested by the opposition, which is worried that the new district would not have enough to offer students and could face unexpected expenses that in the end would dismantle it.

The Clinton Herald Editorial Board has been discussing this during the past few weeks and we always keep coming back to the same train of thought.

First, get out and vote. Cast your ballot so the intentions of the community are no less than crystal clear. Don’t let the few speak for the many.

The second: Know that whatever happens, that it is time for the healing to begin. Change is inevitable. It is the only thing that really can be counted on in life. Whether the merger proceeds and a new district succeeds or whether all three districts remain in place, it really is all about the kids — and kids adapt.

We’ve seen this play out before when schools are shuttered and students moved to new buildings.

A spirit of unity does develop.

So get out and vote. And then, no matter how the numbers play out and what schools remain in the wake, work to make them the best they can be for the children who will grow there in the years to come.
