CLINTON —
This month of October has been designated as Habitat Month by the International Habitat for Humanity organization to raise awareness about providing adequate housing to those around the world in need of better shelter.
Today, 1.6 billion people worldwide live in inadequate shelter. Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County is proud that we are in the process of building our seventh Habitat home in Clinton. Volunteers to help with the construction are needed on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Lunch is provided by various donors to those who help.
Most of the existing Clinton County Habitat homes are located on the old Longfellow Elementary School site. The fifth Habitat home was built on the site of St. Irenaeus School on North 2nd Street. That home was completed in the fall of 2010. The current home is also being built on the old St. Irenaeus School site.
The homes that Habitat builds are simple, decent structures and are not handouts. Partner families put in a large amount of time before and during the building process and work side-by-side with our volunteers to build a home that is affordable. Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County offers a no-interest loan to partner families, who make monthly mortgage payments that help fund future building projects.
The Clinton County Habitat for Humanity operates under a board of directors with several committees and dozens of volunteers. We are in need of additional board and committee members. Anyone in Clinton County is eligible to serve.
