Signs of Easter are all around us – except the weather, of course. Unfortunately, Mother Nature still has her calendar set on January.
Despite the cold temperatures, there are colorful Easter baskets, stuffed bunnies of every color and size plus cute baby chicks lining store shelves. Aw yes, there are signs everywhere that spring is right around the corner.
I always looked forward to the Easter season for many reasons. Like most little girls, my mother would buy me a brand new dress for Easter Sunday.
I loved getting all dressed up in pink dresses and donning shiny white shoes to wear to Sunday school. And with each passing year, my mother documented each one.
When I went shopping over the weekend with my friend, Elise, I felt like I was reliving part of my childhood looking at pastel dresses for spring. Since I only have two dresses hanging in my closet, I went nuts.
I grabbed about six to try on. I felt like a little girl again; I wanted a new dress for Easter.
As I slipped each dress on and twirled around in front of the mirror, I felt 10 years old again.
Since I usually go clothes shopping alone, this excursion was a lot of fun. It is much more enjoyable shopping for cute outfits with a friend. It was very helpful, for me, when we both emerged from our dressing rooms showing off our favorites. Every girl needs a little pampering once in a while.
As I headed for the cashier, I was thrilled with my choices. I had two brand new dresses draped over my arm. Even though the dresses looked very similar to those hanging in my closet, I didn’t care. I might be a creature of habit, but I know what works for me. As I handed the department store clerk my money, I think I must have been glowing. I now had four dresses in my closet — priceless.
And with the right accessories, maybe a strand of pearls and high heels, I might just look a little bit like Donna Reed. A girl can always dream.
Besides a brand new dress for Easter Sunday, I looked forward to the infamous Easter basket with great anticipation. My basket was usually filled with a variety of items from chocolate eggs to 45s. My parents bought me quite a few records including “Hooked on Music” by Mac Davis and I believe the one and only hit by Julian Lennon, “Too Late for Goodbyes.” To this day, I still get those out from time to time and play on my record player.
Besides records and an occasional Barbie doll, my Easter basket was filled with Cadbury eggs. I loved and still love those marvelous chocolate eggs with a sugary yolk filling. I dissected and ate each egg very carefully. I hate to know how long it took me to eat one. I bit off the top and licked the entire egg clean until it was only a chocolate shell — talk about masterful.
As Easter approaches, I can’t wait to wear one of my brand new dresses and eat a Cadbury cream-filled egg. Hopefully the Easter Bunny and my girls bring me a dozen.
