Fulton boys split at Eastland tournament

LANARK, Ill. — Nick Fish keyed a strong second half for the Fulton boys basketball team, and the Steamers bounced back from a 73-65 loss to Stillman Valley earlier in the day to defeat Pearl City 63-56 on Wednesday on the first day of the Eastland Holiday Tournament.

Fish scored all 16 of his points against Pearl City in the second half as the Steamers pulled away from a 27-27 tie at halftime.

Fish scored eight of Fulton’s 12 points in the third quarter as it established a 39-33 lead. He then hit two 3-pointers, while Matt Dail added another, as Fulton scored nine of its first 11 points in the fourth quarter from beyond the arc. Dail led Fulton with 18 points. TJ Huizenga also finished in double digits with 12.

Evan Bull kept things interesting for the Wolves, scoring 13 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth period.

The Steamers clinched the game at the free-throw line. Eleven of their final 13 points came from the line, and they made 11 of their 15 attempts in the final quarter.

The story was just the opposite in the Steamers’ first game Wednesday.

Led by eight points from Devin Kuehl, Fulton jumped in front of Stillman Valley 14-12 after one quarter. Dail then scored seven in the second quarter as the Steamers pushed their lead to 31-26 at the half.

But, senior guard Todd Whitlow led a second-half comeback for Stillman Valley. He dropped in three 3-pointers and scored 13 points in a third-quarter surge that saw the Cardinals build a 56-40 lead.

The Steamers rallied in the fourth quarter, getting seven points from John Widener as they whittled the deficit back into single digits.

Whitlow led Stillman Valley with 18 points, Trevor Gerig added 16 and Tyler Herlihy had 12.

Dail and John Widener scored 12 points each to lead Fulton’s balanced attack, while Huizenga finished with 11 and Jake Willging added 10.
