ERIE, Ill. —
Fulton came out of the locker room strong to start each half, but Monmouth-Roseville was the better finisher, and that made the difference as the Titans beat the Steamers 51-42 on Saturday on the opening day of the Cliff Warkins Cardinal Classic girls basketball tournament.
Fulton led 13-12 after one quarter, but Monmouth-Warren outscored the Steamers 15-6 in the second to take a 27-19 lead at the half. Fulton pulled with 38-35 by the end of the third quarter, but the Titans padded their lead in the final period.
Morgan Wierema scored 17 points to lead Fulton, while Morgan Wierema added 10. Three Monmouth-Warren players scored in double digits, led by Destiny Smith with 15.
Erie wins opener
Tournament host Erie built a double-digit first half lead and defeated Galva 62-46 on Saturday in its first game at the Cliff Warkins Cardinal Classic.
Peyton Rus scored 13 points and Paige Rus and Courtney Cobert scored 10 each in a balanced scoring effort for the winners. Three other Cardinals added six or more points.
The win pushed Erie’s record to 9-4.
Alex Strom of Galva led all scorers with 22 points.
Knoxville dumps Morrison
Nobody from Morrison scored more than four points Saturday as the Fillies lost 50-17 to Knoxville.
Kelly Lenz scored 12 points to lead Knoxville, which outscored Morrison 15-0 in the first quarter.
Other games
In other first-round games Saturday:
Kewanee Wethersfield beat Bureau Valley 53-26. Sarah Hansen made four 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead the winners.
Ridgewood outscored Rockridge 12-6 in the second quarter and that made the difference in a 40-33 victory.
Taylor Brooks made three 3-pointers and scored nine points to lead Ridgewood. Miranda Potter of Rockridge scored 13 points to lead all scorers.
Brooke Beneventi scored 12 points and Emily Langfield and Maddie Dower scored 11 each to lead Stockton past Mercer County 55-27.
The Blackhawks raced to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and outscored Mercer County in each period but the fourth.
