MUSCATINE —
Clinton had an up-and-down day Saturday at the Muscatine volleyball tournament.
The River Queens split their four matches, but both losses came to Mississippi Athletic Conference foes. One of the wins came against previously unbeaten and ranked second in Class 3A, West Liberty.
Class 3A No. 5 Davenport Assumption beat Muscatine in the title match, with the Muskies topping Clinton and the Knights beating Central DeWitt in the semifinals.
“It was somebody else’s day,” Clinton coach Mark Massey said. “But I’m not going to bet against my kids yet. They’ve shown the ability to bounce back and play extremely well.
“We still haven’t played at home. We’re 6-4 and that’s without any Yourd magic. We’ll get a couple of matches at home in the next couple weeks and that should turn things in our favor more, hopefully.”
Camanche (2-5) went 1-2 in pool play, topping Burlington and losing to Muscatine and Central DeWitt.
The River Queens started their day off with a 21-14, 21-19 loss to Assumption in pool play, but bounced back against West Liberty.
“We certainly want to be more consistent,” Massey said. “But I was pleased. After we lost a tough one to Assumption, we came back five minutes later and had an excellent, solid win against West Liberty.”
Massey said Clinton played well in its final pool-play game to top Williamsburg. Then in the semifinals, Muscatine topped the River Queens 23-21, 21-16.
“We played two decent games against Muscatine,” Massey said. “In the second game against Assumption and both games against Muscatine, we were right there at the end.”
