Boys basketball roundup: Rebels rally to beat Midland

GOOSE LAKE — Northeast needed a big comeback over the final five minutes Friday night to snap a two-game losing streak and remain atop the Big East Conference standings.

The Rebels (15-5, 12-3) got just that, outscoring Midland 19-8 over that stretch to grab a 53-52 victory.

Northeast scored the game’s final three points to finish off the comeback.

Matt Cain scored 10 points, all in the second half, as one of four Rebels to reach double figures. Mitchell Haferbier scored seven of his 10 points in the second half.

Ben Lingle helped keep Northeast in the game in the first half, scoring eight of his team-high 12 points before intermission.

Midland (4-15, 3-12) got 12 of Kasey Lasack’s game-high 23 points after halftime.

Renkes hits 1,000 in loss

KEWANEE, Ill. — Fulton’s Erik Renkes surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career, but the Steamers lost to Kewanee 71-55 on Friday in Three Rivers Conference boys basketball.

Fulton led 28-26 at halftime, but Kewanee put on a scoring blitz in the third quarter. Dontae Pryor’s follow shot broke a 30-30 tie and started an 8-0 run for the Boilermakers.

Fulton trailed early but finished the first quarter on a roll to pull within 16-15. A 3-point basket by Matt Fish to open the second quarter put Fulton on top, and the Steamers led most of the rest of the half.

Renkes, a senior, needed 12 points to reach the 1,000-point barrier, and he did it with his first basket of the second half.

“There’s not a better kid who could have achieved it in my book,” Fulton coach Rick Norman said on the KCLN radio postgame show.

Erie gets comeback win

ERIE, Ill. — Jacob Johnston nailed a 3-point basket from the corner to put Erie on top, and the Cardinals held off Morrison the rest of the way for a 47-44 victory Friday in the Three Rivers Conference.

Erie (21-6) pulled event at 35 with about 6:30 left on a Johnston 3-pointer, but Brands responded in kind at the other end. The teams traded the lead once more before Johnston’s 3-pointer put Erie on top to stay.

Brands finished with 19 points to lead the Mustangs.

Camanche dominates after half

CAMANCHE — Camanche scored 11 of the first 13 points Friday night against Bellevue in Big East Conference boys basketball, but then the game slowed and even stopped.

Things were different in the second half with Camanche outscoring Bellevue 30-11 to earn a 40-18 win.
