Clinton girls edged for top spot at Cardinal Relays

MAQUOKETA — Bettendorf won the final race, the 1,600-meter relay, while Clinton placed fourth, and that helped the Bulldogs edge the River Queens 110.3-106-5 on Tuesday at the Cardinal Relays girls track and field meet.

The highlights for Clinton were Sara Wenzel winning the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, a win in the 400-meter relay, a third-place finish from Mareike Kirchenberger in the 100 and high finishes in the three longest races. Grace Shemwell was the runner-up in the 800 meters, Kate Kaster and Hattie Buikema finished 2-3 in the 3,000 and the latter two reversed the order for a 3-4 finish in the 1,500.

Host Maquoketa tied for fourth in the team standings, led by a first-place finish from Trisha Miller in the 3,000. She won in 10 minutes, 51.03 seconds, and had a winning margin of more than 38 seconds.

Two other area athletes won individual events.

Tiffany Bormann of Preston took first in the high jump at 5-4, and Central DeWitt’s Lindsay Smith was the champion in the 400 hurdles (1:09.33).
