Kings 10th in MAC golf tourney

Rursch tops team with a 171

Herald Staff Report

KEWANEE, Ill. — Things didn’t go as well as hoped for Clinton at the Mississippi Athletic Conference boys golf tournament.

The River Kings shot 364 totals both Friday and Saturday to finish 10th with a 728 total at Kewanee Dunes Country Club.

“We were not very happy with our finish this year in the MAC tourney,” Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said. “We did not put up four scores together either day.”

Ryan Rursch led Clinton, tying for 26th place overall, with an 87-84—171. Rursch made three birdies Friday and one Saturday, and he also parred 14 holes combined. He also led Clinton with the fewest putts, 30.

“On Friday, Ryan and Justin (Tomona) had decent scores, and then Saturday, Ryan and Paolo (Marilim) were OK, but neither day were we able to put another score with them,” Niedermeyer said.

Tomona, who had three birdies Friday, tied for 42nd place (86-94—180), while Marilim tied for 44th (95-86—181). Clinton’s Tony Hurlburt finished 56th with a 96-100—196.

“Our lack of team depth really hurt us,” Niedermeyer said.

“On a positive note, we were the only team in the MAC that did not shoot worse on Day 2 from Day 1, due to the windy, cold, weather. So I credit the kids for not giving up and continuing to compete when they could have just as easily given up and folded the tents.”

Pleasant Valley won the team title with a 631 total, led by individual medalist Jack Kennedy (78-75—153). Bobby Wolfe of North Scott tied Spencer Payne of Pleasant Valley for second with a 155.
