Kings face stiff test Friday

Senior quarterback leads 0-1 Lancers into Coan Field

CLINTON — A week ago, Davenport North found success passing against Clinton. The Wildcats cut into Clinton’s early 19-0 lead, although they never caught the River Kings.

This week, Clinton’s defense faces an even stronger test.

North Scott comes to Coan Field for the home opener, and the Lancers bring along a senior quarterback who had an impressive opening night in a 36-28 loss to Bettendorf last Friday.

Senior Randy Schmidt passed for 285 yards and rushed for 144, accounting for most of North Scott’s offense. He completed 17 of 27 passes and threw two touchdown passes and also had a pair of touchdown carries among his 15 attempts.

The dual threat no doubt will challenge Clinton’s defense.

The River Kings, meanwhile, will try to get their own dual-threat quarterback on track. Last week, senior Will Carr had a big night rushing but misfired on all four of his pass attempts.

This week, he will operate against a veteran defense. Nine of North Scott’s top 10 defenders are seniors. Still, it was a sophomore, Colin Kreiter, who led the Lancers in tackles in the opening game.

Clinton’s defense must deal with Schmidt, who completed passes to five receivers last week. Sophomore Ricky Grimes caught five passes for 120 yards, while Noah Gumpert hauled in six for 111 yards. Grimes also caught two touchdown passes, one an 83-yard play.

Friday’s game will follow the sophomore contest and could start as early as 7 p.m. Mississippi Athletic Conference contests start a half-hour after the preliminary game.
