CAMANCHE —
Coach Steve Dougherty saw just the kind of improvement he wanted when his Camanche football team bounced back from a disappointing loss to Bellevue in the season opener and beat Anamosa last Friday night.
“Confidence, mainly,” Dougherty said of the area where his team improved the most in the week between games. “We had a workmanlike attitude. They realized what their responsibilities were and jelled as a team.”
But, he also knows the Indians will need to take another step this Friday, when they open the home season and Class 2A District 4 play against Center Point-Urbana. The Pointers are ranked sixth in the Iowa Associated Press Class 2A rankings and even earned a first-place vote after starting the season with a pair of wins against Class 3A competition, including a 45-42 win against 2011 state champion La Porte City Union.
“They have a very solid program going,” Dougherty said. “They have 45 kids on the varsity roster.”
Senior running back Brandon Roseberry leads the Pointers. He has carried the ball 42 times for 272 yards and scored eight touchdowns in the two games.
“He’s the main focus of their offense, with a very dominating front line,” Dougherty said. “Roseberry can take it between the tackles and can take it outside on you. He has a big fullback in front of him, and they play smash-mouth football.”
Nicholas Dighton (12 carries, 108 yards) is a second-option in the backfield, and quarterback Ryan Wilkin can pass, too. He has completed 15 of 28 passes for 371 yards, with Josh Jirak catching 11 of them for 264 yards.
“They do a nice job of mixing it up,” Dougherty said. “We have to be prepared to be hit and we have to hit.”
Dougherty has liked what he has seen from his defense that will face a stern test Friday.
“I think the advantage of our defense is overall team speed,” he said. “In Week 2, we had guys flying around the field and seven or eight guys around the ball.”
