FULTON, Ill. —
Defense ruled the night Friday at Fulton High School. Sterling Newman and Fulton combined for seven points in the first half, but in the end, the Comets offense picked it up in the second half during its 28-0 win against Fulton.
“Our defense really played lights out for the first two-and-a-half quarters especially,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “If you can hold Newman to seven points in one half, you’re doing something right out there, and we were causing some turnovers and the pads were popping out there.”
Coming into tonight’s game, the Steamers were the second highest scoring team in the Big Rivers Conference with 76 points in their first three games.
However, coming into Friday’s game, the Steamers’ defense had given up the most points in the conference at 87.
“We are improving, I feel really confident about these last five games coming up, I know the kids are going to come back ready to get after it Monday.” Lower said.
After forcing the Steamers to go four and out on the first possession, Newman’s offense marched down the field more than 70 yards and scored on Nick Rude’s 15-yard run.
“The way that defense was set up those two guys (Cody Johnson and Austin Regenwether) should be making those tackles they shouldn’t be getting blocked, and they did a nice job,” Lower said.
The second half started out quickly with Newman coming out on their first possession scoring again extending their lead to 14-0. Jake Snow broke out for the longest score of the game for Newman running the ball 42 yards for the touchdown.
The first possession of the quarter proved advantageous for the Comets. They scored on the first possession in the first, third and fourth quarters.
“For the most part they (Newman) had to earn everything they got out there and I know they were frustrated only having seven points at halftime, but I think that’s a credit to our kids and our defensive game plan and the way we executed it,” Lower said.
The Steamers (1-3) will host Hall/Spring Valley at 7:30 p.m. Friday on homecoming.
