ERIE, Ill. —
A fourth quarter two-yard burst by Zach Inskeep with 36 seconds remaining in the game and Brandon McCullough’s conversion kick gave the Erie/Prophetstown Panthers a 29-28 upset victory over the Morrison Mustangs on Friday night.
Inskeep’s touchdown put a good ending on a Panthers’ homecoming celebration.
Morrison took an early 8-0 lead in the opening period before Inskeep scored from the two and Jordan Chandler was successful on a two-point conversion attempt to even the score at 8-8 by the end of the quarter.
The Mustangs scored twice in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Matt Wilkins and a three-yard carry by Alex Volckmann, with both conversion runs failing. The points gave Morrison a 20-8 halftime margin.
The Panthers fell behind 28-8 in the third quarter before Inskeep went over with his second touchdown of the game. A two-point conversion attempt failed and the Panthers trailed 28-14.
Junior lineman Kyle Coleman pounced on a Morrison 20-yard fumble for a quick six-point play with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter. Inskeep’s conversion run was good pulling the Panthers within six, 28-22.
Inskeep carried 29 times in the game picking up 121 yards. Halfback Ian Franks added 86 yards on five carries, one a 56-yard sprint.
Coleman led the defense with two solo tackles and 11 assists.
Late rally lifts Comets
STANWOOD — Bellevue scored 26 points in the fourth quarter, and all 33 second-half points, to beat North Cedar 40-14 on Friday night.
Cole Reeg rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns for the Comets. Jace Michels also rushed for two touchdowns, while Jamie Kremer ran for one and caught a touchdown pass from Reeg.
