Led by Bobby Wolfe’s 1-under par 71, the North Scott Lancers took first place at the seventh annual Clinton River King Invitational Golf Tournament on Wednesday with a team total of 309 strokes, the lowest team score in the history of the tournament and the first championship for the Lancers.
Finishing second over the Clinton Country Club at The Oaks Course was Muscatine (317), followed by Pleasant Valley (318), Burlington (330), Davenport North (347), Davenport Assumption (351), Clinton (352) and Davenport West (359).
“I knew North Scott, Muscatine and Pleasant Valley would finish ahead of us,” Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said. “I thought we could beat Assumption but they played hard. Burlington played much better than usual, but that happens.
“I thought we could finish fifth, but we were five strokes out of that,” Niedermeier said. “We just had little mistakes, but a team just makes them. Not having Koby (Cleary, who did not finish) also hurt.”
The Clinton coach added, “The tournament ran smooth with the golfers playing in about four-and-a-half hours, which is all right on this course. The course is in decent shape, having had some rain during the night. It’s nice to see rain anytime you can get it.”
Jason Schroeder, the athletic director at North Scott, said: ”This is the first time in a while that we have won a tournament (four or five years, according to the Lancer golfers). We had a good day on a tough course.
“We’ve been playing well the past two weeks. I knew we could score well, and we scored very well with a good group of seniors,” Schroeder said. “Coach Dustin Drenth was unable to make it today, so I had to sit in for him. He did all the work; I just sat and watched great golf.”
Wolfe made it four straight victories for his grade at the Clinton tournament, beating twin brother Jack by five strokes in the medalist race. He shared first-place honors as a freshman with Spencer Payne of Pleasant Valley, both with 79s in 2009. A year later as a sophomore he fired a 78, only one stroke behind senior James Hurning of Pleasant Valley. Last year he was the leading junior, shooting a 76, matching the scores of Erron Vandemore, a sophomore from Pleasant Valley, and seniors A.J. Skinner of Davenport Assumption and Michael Canfield of Muscatine.
“I had good tee shots; my strokes were good,” Wolfe said. “I chipped in on (hole) 15 for a birdie. I had 30 putts, 16 on the front (nine holes) and 14 on the back. I really like this tournament.”
Paolo Marilim, a senior, led the River Kings with an 83, followed by Ryan Rursch (85), Justin Tomona (90) and Kevin Clausen (94). The low four players make up the team total. Other River King scores were Tony Hurlburt (97) and David Orte (103).
