Football roundup: Newman edges Morrison

STERLING, Ill. — Sterling Newman topped Morrison 10-7 on Saturday in a Big Rivers Conference showdown of teams that have won the past three Illinois Class 2A state titles.

Newman (2-0) took a 10-0 lead with 1:08 left in the third quarter when Nick Rude scored a touchdown from 1 yard out.

The Mustangs (1-1) had a response. Danny Willis scored from 9 yards out to cut Newman’s lead to three.

Morrison, ranked first in Class 2A, had chances after that, but a touchdown was called back because of a penalty and the Mustangs missed a potential game-tying field goal. Newman, ranked third in Class 3A, hung on.

The difference in the game ended up being the game’s first score — a 27-yard field goal by Chris Breed for the Comets.

Camanche earns first win

ANAMOSA — Camanche’s defense set up the team’s first score with a fumble recovery, then scored the next two as the Indians defeated Anamosa 30-12 in non-district football Friday night.

The Indians (1-1) recorded six takeaways and limited Anamosa to 183 total yards. The Blue Raiders gained just 24 yards on the ground and were 13 of 32 passing with four interceptions. Isaah Jackson had three of the interceptions.

“We were concerned that the defense would outscore the offense,” Camanche coach Steve Dougherty joked. “We were pleased with our defensive scheme. We changed it up a bit. It’s a good situation since they’re a pass-happy opponent and we have an athletic secondary.”

Trailing 6-0, Camanche started its scoring in the second quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Zach Smith that followed a fumble recovery near midfield.

Smith, a defensive lineman, then put the Indians ahead to stay when he returned an interception 45 yards for a score.

“Zach Smith really has stepped up,” Dougherty said of his returning starter at center who is playing both ways this fall. “He’s turned into quite an addition on defense.”

Michael Osaro scored on a 35-yard fumble return in the third quarter, then Devin Norman closed the 24-0 scoring surge with a 60-yard run. Norman led the Indians on offense with 136 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Dougherty said his team made good strides since a season-opening loss at Bellevue.

“It seems like every year the team that does the most growing between weeks one and two will have the most success during the season,” he said. “The team took full advantage of that (week of practice).”

Camanche makes its home debut Friday against seventh-ranked Center Point-Urbana, another team with a wide-open offense.

“(Anamosa) definitely was a good opponent to get geared up for this week,” Dougherty said.

Late score sinks Sabers

WILLIAMSBURG — David Francis scored on a 31-yard run with 1:45 remaining Friday night to give Williamsburg a 24-21 win against visiting Central DeWitt in non-district play.

The touchdown capped an eight-play, 62-yard drive. The only third down on the drive was converted when Austin Maas caught a pass from Jacob Donohoe at the Williamsburg 44 and gained an additional 7 yards to get the ball in Sabers territory.

The Sabers made three first downs on their final possession, including a 20-yard pass play to Emmit Enyeart on fourth-and-15 from the DeWitt 43. With time running out, Mitch Green spiked the ball on first down, but the game ended when he was sacked at the Williamsburg 43 on the following play. Green completed 7 of 10 passes for 97 yards.

Green did most of his damage on the ground as part of a 1-2 punch that gained 312 yards for the Sabers. Chris Keitel led the team with 167 yards on 22 carries, while Green added 145 on 18 attempts.

Keitel had helped the Sabers take a 21-17 lead when he capped a 12-play, 79-yard drive and scored on a 7-yard run with 9:26 left in the fourth quarter.

Francis led the Raiders with 115 yards rushing on 21 carries.
