Bellevue answers every question, beats Irish boys

CLINTON — Prince of Peace was forced to play catchup almost all night. And every time the Irish pulled close, Bellevue had an answer, and it wasn’t the answer the Irish wanted to hear.

Led by 13 points from Colin Hager and 10 from Logan DeVries, Bellevue defeated Prince of Peace 49-42 in boys basketball Friday. The final result was made closer only because Lucas Laufenberg leaned in and hit a 3-point basket with 4 seconds left that turned into a four-point play when he was fouled.

“We were disorganized all night,” Prince of Peace coach Gerry Murphy said. “It was discouraging as far as coaching goes. We had a lot of breakdowns, and the better team won.”

The Comets won, in part, because they answered every challenge the Irish offered.

“This was a good win for our kids,” Bellevue coach Rick Casel said. “The is probably one of the toughest places to shoot and one of the toughest places to play.”

DeVries nailed a couple of big shots early for the Comets.

After Nic Roth (11 points) hit a 3-pointer to pull Prince of Peace within 9-7 with 1:44 left in the first quarter, DeVries responded in kind at the other end with 54 seconds left to push the lead back to five.

Laufenberg, who led all scorers with 15 points, scored along the baseline early in the second quarter to cut the gap to 12-11, but Tyler Banowetz went end-to-end for a layup and DeVries followed with another 3-pointer to widen the lead to 17-11.

“I thought he came in and had big shots,” Casel said of DeVries, a 5-foot-10 junior guard. “He had one in transition and one in the flow of the offense.”

Bellevue stayed fairly comfortably ahead the rest of the way. It led 24-15 at halftime and 41-27 after three quarters, thanks to a 3-pointer by Peyton Wolter, playing in his first game (mono), with :05 left.
